It's kind of part of the life of a dog that lives on the streets of Thailand, there are many dangers on the roads for people as well but the dogs seem to get the worst of it since many of them get excited about something that is "over there" and don't fully understand what is going on with traffic. The fact that the dog was hit by a minivan invokes some feelings of rage because you don't have to be here for very long before you start to get a hatred of sorts for minivan drivers as they almost always drive dangerously and are often sleep-deprived and on stimulant drugs to make as much money as possible.
Manao is the dog in question here, and is a relatively new addition to our temple dogs at Tiger Cave.
it wasn't difficult at ll to determine that something was wrong with Manao, because you can see a dog limping or avoiding using one of their legs from quite some distance. Manao is very new to the pack but is still very approachable and getting him into the cage was as easy as having some chicken. He came with us right away.
We don't know yet if it is a broken leg, a micro-fracture, if just a bruise, but since the monks let us know that he has been limping and lying down most of the time, even not turning up for meals, we know that we needed to intervene in order to keep him healthy. We transported him to the vet and xrays will be taking place soon.
Its always a bit sad to me to see these dogs in the kennels as they await treatment and I always feel like I have betrayed them a bit because they trust me and then I put them into a holding are (we have to) and they normally will seek out a corner to be as far away from everyone as they can be. They give us this look of "I trusted you, and you put me here" that kind of melts my heart a bit, but I know that Manao is here because he needs to be and we will be putting him back with his friends just as soon as we can figure out what is wrong with him.
it's quite amazing how a bit of fried chicken can make all the suffering go away, even if just for a little while. It is my secret weapon when dealing with dogs that kind of know me, but not really. Just as a side note you should be very careful when giving fried chicken to dogs, the pieces with small bones can be quite dangerous for dogs. I have been doing this a long time and know what kind to give but if you feel like giving a dog some chicken I would recommend just giving them the meat.
Very large bones like this are normally very safe because even though dogs' jaws are very strong, they can't crack this into tiny pieces well enough to hurt themselves with it.
Hopefully Manao will get a bit of treatment and a few days in the kennel and then will be well enough to head back to the Temple. We don't like to keep the dogs here any longer than we have to because it affects their mental health negatively and yes, that is a real thing. It is quite common for dogs in captivity to refuse to eat out of depression.
We'll get you back out there Manao! And with a healed leg to boot!
