After celebrating children's day, I wanted to do something special for my son and what better way to spend a sunny weekend than with a visit to the Maia Zoo.
Last weekend was one of those special moments that I will remember for a long time. It was the weekend right after children's day, and I wanted to do something nice for my son. I woke up early that day, and soon after, the rest of my family did too. Everyone seemed to be in a good mood, and the sun was shining outside. It felt like the perfect day to go out together and make some memories. After a quick breakfast and a few ideas thrown around the table, we made a decision, we would visit Maia Zoo.
O fim de semana passado foi um daqueles momentos especiais que vou recordar durante muito tempo. Era o fim de semana logo a seguir ao Dia da criança, e eu queria fazer algo giro para o meu filho. Acordei cedo nesse dia e, logo a seguir, o resto da minha família também. Todos pareciam estar de bom humor e o sol brilhava lá fora. Parecia o dia perfeito para sairmos juntos e criarmos algumas memórias. Depois de um pequeno-almoço rápido e de algumas ideias discutidas, tomámos uma decisão: iríamos visitar o Jardim Zoológico da Maia.
It had been a while since we had gone to a zoo, and Maia Zoo had been on our list for some time. We figured it would be exciting for him to see these animals up close. So, we packed our bags, brought some water, snacks, and hats, and headed out for the day.
Já não íamos a um jardim zoológico há algum tempo e o Jardim Zoológico da Maia estava na nossa lista há algum tempo. Imaginámos que seria emocionante para ele ver estes animais de perto. Assim, fizemos as malas, trouxemos água, snacks e chapéus, e partimos para o passeio.
As we entered the zoo, the atmosphere was lively. Children were running around, laughing and pointing at animals. There were colorful signs, walking paths, and greenery all around. But we had one goal in mind, we wanted to start with the reptile area. So, we looked at the map near the entrance, found the way to the Reptile House, and walked straight there.
Ao entrarmos no jardim zoológico, o ambiente era animado. Crianças corriam, riam e apontavam para os animais. Havia placas coloridas, trilhos para caminhadas e muito verde por todo o lado. Mas tínhamos um objetivo em mente: queríamos começar pela área dos répteis. Assim, olhámos para o mapa perto da entrada, encontrámos o caminho para a Casa dos Répteis e fomos logo para lá.
When we entered the reptile section, it was a whole new world. The temperature changed, it was warmer and more humid, just like a rainforest. Glass enclosures filled with plants, rocks and small ponds surrounded us. Inside these enclosures were the stars of the day, reptiles of all shapes and sizes.
Quando entrámos na secção de répteis, era um mundo totalmente novo. A temperatura mudou, tornou-se mais quente e húmido, como uma floresta tropical. Rodeados de vidro repletos de plantas, pedras e pequenos lagos rodeavam-nos. Dentro destes cercados estavam as estrelas do dia, répteis de todas as formas e tamanhos.
Our son's face lit up immediately. His eyes were wide and he looked like he didn't know where to look first. It was a large boa constrictor. It looked calm but powerful. My son watched it for a few minutes, fascinated. We read the information board and learned that it came from South America and used its strong body to squeeze its prey. Even I was learning new things!
O rosto do nosso filho iluminou-se imediatamente. Os seus olhos estavam arregalados e parecia não saber para onde olhar primeiro. Era uma jiboia grande. Parecia calma, mas poderosa. O meu filho observou-a por alguns minutos, fascinado. Lemos o painel informativo e descobrimos que ela vinha da América do Sul e usava o seu corpo forte para espremer as suas presas. Até eu estava a aprender coisas novas!
We moved on to a section with lizards. Some of them were small and quick, moving around their enclosures like lightning. Others just stood still on rocks, soaking in the warmth from the lamps above.
Passámos para uma zona com lagartos. Alguns eram pequenos e rápidos, movendo-se pelos seus recintos como um raio. Outros simplesmente ficavam parados nas rochas, absorvendo o calor das lâmpadas que estavam por cima.
Then we came to the iguana enclosure. These reptiles were big, green, and majestic. Its eyes looked half-closed, and it had long, spiky scales running down its back. We learned that iguanas are herbivores, and they love to eat leaves, flowers, and fruit. My son was amazed.
Chegamos então ao recinto das iguanas. Estes répteis eram grandes, verdes e majestosos. Os seus olhos pareciam semicerrados e havia escamas longas e pontiagudas a descer pelas costas. Ficámos a saber que as iguanas são herbívoras e adoram comer folhas, flores e frutos. O meu filho ficou impressionado.
We will definitely return. And next time, we might even bring a notebook to write down all the cool facts we learn about reptiles.
Until then, we will treasure this day at the zoo. It was a little adventure, filled with smiles and discoveries.
Com certeza voltaremos. E da próxima vez, talvez até levemos um caderno para anotar todas as curiosidades que vamos aprendendo sobre os répteis.
